Drax urges companies to join BECCS supplier engagement program

Renewable energy giant Drax is calling on UK companies of all sizes to join the UK’s first Bioenergy Supplier Engagement Program with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).

The company will host a series of national events throughout 2022 in partnership with the West & North Yorkshire and Hull & Humber Chambers of Commerce, as well as other events in the North, Midlands and South of England. These will allow Drax to identify a strong supply chain for BECCS, ensuring that the project can be accelerated as soon as planning approval is received.

The series of events will begin with an introductory webinar on September 23, 2021, hosted with the business support organization NOF. The initial event will give new and potential suppliers the opportunity to learn more about the BECCS project, as well as how they can be involved in delivering this vital negative emissions technology.

Graham Backhouse, Drax Commercial Director for the BECCS project, said: “Negative emission technologies such as BECCS will play a critical role in enabling the UK to meet its net zero targets. At its peak, BECCS at Drax will protect and create more than 10,000 jobs, leveling the north and positioning the UK as a world leader in this climate preservation technology.

“This event program is a fantastic opportunity for businesses of all sizes to get involved and learn more about the project, and we want to encourage a range of businesses from across the country to participate.

Drax has a proven track record of delivering ambitious and pioneering infrastructure projects – converting its power station in North Yorkshire to use sustainable biomass instead of coal has enabled it to become the world’s largest producer of renewable energy UK, reducing emissions by over 90%. and pave the way for the deployment of BECCS.

The event takes place ahead of a formal public consultation on Drax’s BECCS plans in November, when stakeholders, including local communities, can learn more about the proposed project and provide feedback.

Companies wishing to participate in the Supplier Intro Event webinar on September 23, or the series of events more generally and how they can be involved, can express their interest through www.drax.com/supplierevent.
