Under the leadership of Global Scholars Program Director Dr. Clint Relya and director of the Sorrell 360 Center for Professional Life Dr. Laura Dovethe 10-day trip included a five-day stay in Salinas de Guaranda, a small village nestled approximately 13,000 feet in the Andes.
“The economy of Salinas is based on micro-industry. Under the coordination of a cooperative, nearly a dozen small businesses manufacture a variety of products for import and export, including cheeses, chocolate, dried mushrooms and fruits, clothes, yarn and others,” Relyea said. “It’s the heart of the Ecuador study abroad program.
“The group was proud to have raised more than $10,000 – beyond their original $6,000 goal – who bought not only medicines and other essentials for the center for the elderly, but also 10 sheep for the nearby village of Yacubana,” said Relyea.
