Real Madrid are said to be monitoring defender Joe Gomez’s situation at Liverpool, as manager Carlo Ancelotti consider defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window.
Los Blancos are favorites to reclaim the La Liga title from rivals Atletico Madrid, having established a five-point lead at the top of the table. Carlo Ancelotti, who made a significant impact following his return to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, will look to continue rebuilding his squad next year.
According to daily mail, Real Madrid have included Liverpool defender Joe Gomez on their defensive list, which also includes Antonio Rudiger, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres. The La Liga giants are prioritizing strengthening their attack next summer by signing Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, but are also making a list of defensive options, the report adds.
24-year-old Joe Gomez is out of favor at Anfield, given the form of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip, and summer rookie Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. The England stopper has suffered a series of injuries over the past two years, preventing him from playing to his full potential.
Despite his return to full physical form, the 24-year-old may find it difficult to bulldozer back into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans. Gomez’s current situation at Liverpool has alerted Real Madrid, who are determined to sign a top center-back in 2022.
Joe Gomez at Real Madrid: should Carlo Ancelotti’s club choose him?
Real Madrid lost their defensive rocks earlier this summer as club captain Sergio Ramos left for Paris Saint-Germain and Raphael Varane joined Manchester United. The Merengues have recruited David Alaba from Bayern Munich for free to fill the void left by Ramos and Varane, while promoting Eder Militao in the starting XI.
However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are still missing as center-backs, with Nacho Fernandez being the only recognized option to tour with Alaba and Militao this quarter. With that in mind, the Los Blancos boss may be right to bring in some defensive reinforcements after he recently put together a four-person roster.
Liverpool’s Joe Gomez is among the center-backs considered by Los Blancos ahead of next summer’s transfer window. The 24-year-old, who won the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds, has extensive experience in the Premier League as well as in Europe under his banner. At just 24, he has played over 150 competitive games for Charlton Athletic and Liverpool combined.
Strong, tenacious and athletic, Gomez rarely gets beaten by his opponent in a run and is a player known to give his all on the pitch. The ex-Charlton Athletic starlet is also proficient in the air and never shy away from taking on physically intimidating attackers. Moreover, the England 11-cap international can also operate as a full-back on both sides, and such versatility adds more value to his name.
Even though the past two years have been unhappy for him due to lingering injury issues, Gomez is still 24 and can jumpstart his career with Real Madrid. The Englishman certainly has his best years ahead of him and if he manages to avoid injury he can become a long-term asset for Los Blancos.
So, Real Madrid must do everything to sign Liverpool’s Gomez in the summer window.
